Joseph Rowe Smith papers, 1846-1848.

The letters were written by Captain Joseph Smith, 2d Regiment of Infantry, to his wife and other members of his family from Tampico and Puebla during the Mexican War. There are also two letters to Joseph from his brother, Henry Smith, who was stationed at Vera Cruz. The miscellaneous papers contain several extracts and requests for breveting Smith for his bravery at Cerro Gordo, Contreras, and Churubusco.

Joseph Rowe Smith was born in Stillwater, New York on Sept. 8, 1802. He graduated from West Point, U.S. Military Academy in 1823 and served in the Florida war, 1837-1842; Mexican War, and returned in 1861 because of a debilitating wound to his left arm.
